It follows style instructions instead of nodding at them, and it skips the padded filler that makes machine text so easy to spot.
The coding story is similar. Claude 4.6 is rated the strongest code generator of 2026 — comfortable with full-file refactors, aware of architecture, fewer made-up APIs. For long documents and codebases, its roughly 1-million-token context handles almost anything you'd realistically throw at it.
The case for ChatGPT
GPT-5.5 is the assistant that gets things done. Browsing, tool use, odd one-off requests, the daily grab bag — ChatGPT handles variety better than either rival, and its plugin and developer ecosystem is still the deepest. Its context window (about 1.05 million tokens) now matches Claude's. If you can only keep one subscription and your needs change by the hour, this is the safe pick. Not the specialist. The generalist — and most people need the generalist.
The case for Gemini
Two words: capacity and Google. Gemini 2.5 Ultra takes in around 2 million tokens — double what the others manage — so entire codebases, video libraries and document archives fit in a single conversation. It's also the strongest of the three on multimodal work, and if your day already happens in Gmail, Docs and Drive, the integration is so smooth it feels unfair.
The weak spot: complex software engineering, where evaluations put it below ChatGPT and Claude.
What nobody's marketing admits
The gap between these three is smaller than the arguments about them. All three matured fast this year; a casual user would be happy with any of them. Rankings also reshuffle with every model update, so hold your loyalties loosely. And every $20 tier has usage caps — heavy users will meet them, wherever they start.
The cheat code
Can't decide? Answer three questions. Work lives in Google? Gemini. Output is prose or code that humans will judge? Claude. Everything else? ChatGPT.
Or do what a growing number of power users do: keep two. A daily driver plus a specialist runs $40 a month — less than most streaming stacks, and you stop wondering what the other assistant would've said.
