Apple's thinnest phone is getting a do-over. According to a GF Securities research note from analyst Jeff Pu, reported Friday by MacRumors, the iPhone Air 2 should land in the first quarter of 2027 — and it brings five upgrades, one of which fixes the original's biggest complaint.
The camera, finally
That complaint? One lens. The ultra-thin Air launched with a single 48-megapixel Fusion camera while cheaper iPhones shipped with two, and it's been the asterisk on every recommendation since. Pu says the Air 2 adds a second 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera alongside the first. Just like that, the Air's clearest weakness is gone.
The rest of the list is subtler. The Dynamic Island gets slightly smaller. The chip jumps to an A20 Pro on TSMC's 2-nanometer process — the current Air runs a 3nm A19 Pro — which should mean more performance for less battery. Apple's second-generation N2 chip takes over wireless duties from the N1, which today covers Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread and keeps AirDrop and Personal Hotspot running smoothly. And there's a new C2 modem for 5G, which is saying something: Apple already claims the current C1X is the most power-efficient modem it's ever shipped in an iPhone.
What isn't changing
The basics hold steady. Pu expects the same 6.5-inch display, the same 12GB of RAM, and the same 18-megapixel Center Stage selfie camera. The Air stays what it is — the thinnest, lightest big-screen iPhone — it just stops asking you to give up so much to get it.
Apple's calendar is the real story
Look at the timing and you can see Apple's new playbook. The Air 2 arrives around March 2027 next to the standard iPhone 18 and a cheaper iPhone 18e. The expensive stuff — iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra — comes this September. Apple has split its iPhone year in half: flagships in the fall, mainstream models in the spring. Two launch events, two waves of headlines.
For shoppers, that creates an actual dilemma. If you've been eyeing the current Air, the phone that resolves its most-cited flaw is now about eight months out. Waiting stings, but buying a single-camera Air in late 2026 knowing a dual-camera version is around the corner stings more.
The usual caveat
None of this is official. Pu's note is analyst forecasting — well-sourced forecasting from someone with a long history on Apple's supply chain, and it lines up with earlier reporting about the split launch strategy, but dates and specs can drift between now and spring. Apple will say nothing until it's ready. Until then, the Air 2 is a strong rumor with a sensible shape: same silhouette, fewer compromises.
