The waiting part is over. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8 went on open sale August 3, and the first deliveries — including the new Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 — start reaching buyers on August 7.
If you sat out the pre-order window, here's where things stand and what changed.
From pre-order to shelves
Samsung ran pre-orders from July 28 through August 3, closing the window the same day general sales opened. South Korea gets its official launch on August 7, the same day shipments begin, so the whole lineup — two Folds, a Flip, and two watches — lands in hands within the same week.
That's a fast turnaround from announcement to availability. Samsung unveiled this generation of foldables in late July, and barely two weeks later the devices are shipping. The company clearly wants its foldables selling well before attention shifts to the fall's other launches.
The perks that just expired
Pre-order customers got real incentives this time, and they're worth knowing about even now — mostly so you understand what you missed and can weigh whether to wait for the next promotion.
The big one was Samsung's "Double Storage" offer: pay for the 256GB model, get the 512GB version. On top of that came Amazon gift cards scaled by device — $350 with a Galaxy Z Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra, $200 with a Z Flip8, $100 with a Watch Ultra2, and $50 with a Watch9.
Those offers ended when pre-orders closed on August 3. Buying today generally means paying sticker price for the storage tier you actually want, though carriers and retailers tend to roll out their own deals once launch-week dust settles.
Why the Ultra matters this cycle
This is the first Fold generation to ship with an Ultra tier sitting above the standard Fold8 — a signal that Samsung now sees the book-style foldable as a broad enough category to split into good and maxed-out versions, the way it long has with the S-series.
Foldables stopped being experiments a while ago. What's changed is the cadence: announcement, pre-order, and shipping compressed into about two weeks, exactly how Samsung treats its mainstream flagships. The category has been promoted to the front line.
Timing, if you're deciding
The awkward truth for Samsung: its shipping date lands five days before Google's August 12 event, where the Pixel 11 lineup is expected. Anyone torn between ecosystems gets both answers within the same week.
If you're set on Samsung, there's little reason to wait — the hardware ships Thursday, and the pre-order bonuses are already gone, so nothing further expires. If you're the type who buys on promotion, history says the next meaningful discounts tend to arrive once launch demand cools.
Either way, the 2026 foldable season is no longer upcoming. As of this week, it's here.
