Samsung has locked in July 22 for its next Galaxy Unpacked event in London, and the headline act is a foldable that may look unlike any Fold before it. According to a run of pre-event leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will lead a lineup that also includes a Fold 8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and new Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 wearables.
A wider, "passport" Fold
The most significant change is shape. Reports suggest Samsung is shifting the Fold to a wider, roughly 4:3 "passport-style" form factor — a departure from the tall, narrow candy-bar profile that has defined the line since its debut. The Fold 8 is said to carry a 7.6-inch main AMOLED display with a 5.4-inch cover screen, dimensions chosen to make the closed phone feel less cramped and the open tablet mode more natural for reading and multitasking.
That redesign matters because the original Fold silhouette has been one of the format's persistent complaints: a usable outer screen that always felt a hair too skinny. Widening the device is Samsung's attempt to answer a criticism that rivals have used to differentiate their own foldables.
The Flip 8 and a smaller crease
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is expected to feature a 6.9-inch main AMOLED panel with reduced crease visibility, a 4.1-inch cover display and a 4,300mAh battery supporting 25W wired charging. None of those specs are revolutionary on paper, but a less noticeable crease and a slightly larger battery target the two things Flip owners tend to grumble about most.
More than phones
Rounding out the event, Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2, likely running its next-generation One UI Watch platform with refreshed health tracking and accessibility features. Bundling wearables with the foldables is a familiar Samsung tactic — it gives buyers a reason to stay inside the ecosystem and pads the value of trade-in and pre-order deals.
Why it matters
Foldables remain a small slice of the overall smartphone market, but they are the segment where Samsung still sets the pace and commands premium pricing. A genuine redesign — rather than another incremental spec bump — is the kind of move that can reignite interest in a category some analysts feared was plateauing.
