Remakes lead the charge in gaming's biggest summer month
July 2026 is loud. And the loudest arrivals are two beloved campaigns rebuilt from the keel up.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced dropped July 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC — the month's marquee release by a distance. Ubisoft's remake of the 2013 pirate favorite keeps the story and characters intact and expands almost everything else: overhauled visuals, a denser world map, faster combat, bigger naval battles, a deeper end-game. Plenty of players still call Black Flag the series' peak. "Same soul, bigger ocean" is precisely the pitch they've spent a decade asking for.
Halo on a PlayStation. Really.
The other headline hits July 28: Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original Halo campaign, on Xbox Series X/S, PC — and PS5. Say that sentence in 2016 and you'd have been laughed out of the room. In 2026 it's just Microsoft's multiplatform strategy reaching its logical end. PlayStation owners get one of gaming's founding shooters as a native download for the first time ever.
The middle of the month isn't filler, either. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game lands July 23 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC, part of a slate that release calendars put at a dozen-plus notable launches in July alone.
Everything orbits November
Look closer at the crowded calendar and you'll spot the gravity well. With summer showcases done, the road to Grand Theft Auto 6 is set — Rockstar's giant is planned for November 2026, and nearly every month before it is stuffed with publishers banking sales before the supernova. Marvel's Wolverine and a new Gears entry round out the late-2026 heavyweights.
That pressure explains this summer's shape. Mid-size games that once would've aimed for the holidays are shipping now. Remakes — safe bets with audiences built in — carry the front of the calendar while the original blockbusters keep their powder dry.
Why it matters
If you play games, July's a value month: two of the most celebrated campaigns ever made, modernized, plus steady releases on every platform — early Switch 2 support included. If you watch the industry, it's a stress test of the remake economy. Black Flag Resynced and Campaign Evolved are both bets that nostalgia plus real expansion — not a texture pack with a price tag — can hold attention in the year of GTA 6.
