If you're planning to buy a phone on impulse this month — don't. August 2026 is the worst possible moment for it, and weirdly, the best month all year to plan a purchase instead. Three launch windows are stacked within six weeks, and where you buy against that calendar decides whether you get new hardware or old pricing.
Let's walk the calendar.
August 12: Google goes first
The Pixel 11 series — four phones, including a new Pro Fold — gets announced at Made by Google on August 12, with retail expected August 20 and reports pointing at a base price near $1,029.
So the Pixel advice is almost insultingly simple: don't buy one this week. Want the newest model? It's days away. Want a bargain? Pixel 10 prices typically drop the moment the successor ships. Buying before the 12th means paying full price specifically to miss both.
September: Apple, but not the Apple event you're used to
Here's the plot twist on Apple's side. September's launch is expected to bring the iPhone 18 Pro, the 18 Pro Max and Apple's first foldable iPhone — and that's it. The standard iPhone 18 has reportedly moved to spring 2027, where it'll show up with an iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air.
Read that again if you've been "waiting for the iPhone 18." Unless you mean the Pro, you're not waiting until September. You're waiting until next spring — more than half a year longer than you probably assumed.
Is the 18 Pro worth holding out for?
For most people, honestly, no. The expected changes are nice but modest: smaller Dynamic Island, a variable-aperture main camera, new colors, and Apple's C2 modem with satellite 5G. Price hikes are widely expected on top. So waiting gets you an incremental phone at a higher price — while the iPhone 17 Pro sells today at a known number that only drops once the new Pros arrive.
The exception is anyone still carrying an iPhone 15 or older. For you, patience pays properly: the A20 generation brings a 2-nanometer chip that's a real efficiency leap, 256GB base storage becomes the norm, and Apple Intelligence gets more room to run. The older your current phone, the better the next generation treats you.
Your move, by situation
On a Pixel: wait the eight days. Then pick between the new thing and the suddenly-cheaper old thing. That's a free win either way.
Need an iPhone right now: buy the 17 or 17 Pro and don't look back. September's event is a Pro-and-foldable show, and current models usually get discounted right after it anyway.
On an iPhone 15 or older, and able to wait: the spring 2027 standard iPhone 18 is your reward. Real chip leap, more storage, no Pro pricing.
Foldable-curious: circle September. Apple's first folding phone lands in a category Samsung and Google have had entirely to themselves — whatever it costs, it resets that market.
The one rule
Whatever camp you're in, the single bad move is identical: paying full price for a current flagship in the next two weeks. Any other month, fine. This month — with Google's launch days out, Apple's six weeks away, and discounts trailing both events — it's the most expensive timing available.
The phones will still be there in three weeks. The full-price regret would be too.
