Instagram is opening its public posts to Google Search, with the change beginning to roll out around July 10. That turns a feature announcement into a practical opportunity: for the first time, the words you put on an Instagram post can pull in visitors from outside the app. Here is how to set your content up to be found.
Step 1: Make sure your account is public
Only public accounts are eligible to appear in search results. If you run a personal or business profile you want discovered, open Settings → Account privacy and confirm the account is set to public. Private accounts remain invisible to search engines by design, which is the correct choice if discovery is not your goal.
Step 2: Write captions the way people search
Search engines read text, not vibes. Instead of a clever one-liner, lead your caption with the plain-language phrase someone would actually type — "easy 20-minute weeknight pasta," say, rather than "dinner sorted 🍝." You can still keep your voice; just make sure the first line or two contains the descriptive keywords that match real search queries.
Step 3: Use on-screen text and alt text
Instagram can read text placed on images and Reels, and it lets you add custom alt text describing a photo. Fill both in with accurate, specific language. Alt text lives under Advanced settings → Accessibility when you create a post, and it does double duty: it helps visually impaired users and gives search systems more context about your content.
Step 4: Favor evergreen topics
Search traffic rewards content that stays relevant. A trend-of-the-week Reel fades fast, but a how-to, a buying guide or a "best of" list keeps drawing clicks for months. If discovery matters to you, weight your calendar toward topics people will still be searching for long after you post.
Step 5: Lean into longer Reels
With Reels now supporting up to 20 minutes, there is room for genuine tutorials and deep dives — the exact formats that perform well in search. A thorough, well-titled tutorial is far more likely to earn a durable search position than a five-second clip.
Step 6: Be patient and measure
Search visibility builds slowly. Do not expect a post to rank the day it goes live; give the system weeks, then watch your profile and website traffic for referrals originating outside the app. Use Instagram's own insights, plus any web analytics you have, to see which posts are pulling search traffic and make more like them.
The bottom line
The change does not require you to become an SEO specialist. It rewards clarity: public account, descriptive captions, honest alt text and content worth finding. Set those foundations now, before the rollout is complete, and you will be positioned to capture search traffic that simply was not available to Instagram creators before.
