Your phone has quietly become an AI machine. It summarizes your notifications, rewrites your messages, edits your photos, and answers questions about whatever is on your screen. Much of that work now happens directly on the device — but not all of it. Some requests are still sent to company servers in the cloud, and in 2026 the makers of the biggest mobile platforms have finally given users clearer switches to decide which is which.
Here is how to keep more of your phone's AI processing on the device itself, where your personal data never leaves your hand.
On-device vs. cloud: why it matters
AI features come in two flavors. On-device processing runs the model locally using your phone's own chip, so your messages, photos, and screen contents stay on the hardware you are holding. Cloud processing sends your request to a remote server with more computing power — useful for heavier tasks, but it means data leaves your device, even if only briefly.
Neither is inherently unsafe. Apple, Google, and Samsung all encrypt these transfers and say cloud requests are not stored. But if you would rather keep sensitive material off external servers entirely, every major platform now lets you lean toward local processing.
iPhone: Apple Intelligence
Apple built its system around on-device processing first. Most Apple Intelligence requests are handled locally, and anything that needs more power is routed to Private Cloud Compute — Apple silicon servers that, the company says, process your request without storing it or making it accessible to Apple.
To review or switch it off, open Settings, then tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, where you will find the master toggle for Apple Intelligence. Turning it off disables the generative features entirely. If you would rather keep the features but limit what Siri sends externally, use the Siri controls on the same screen to manage app access and what each app is allowed to learn.
Samsung Galaxy: the one switch most people miss
Samsung offers the most direct control of the three: a single toggle that forces Galaxy AI to run locally only.
On recent One UI versions, open Settings, tap Galaxy AI, and turn on Process data only on device. On older One UI 6.1 phones, the path is Settings → Advanced features → Advanced intelligence, then the same toggle. Flip it, and Samsung's AI features — writing tools, summaries, translations — stop sending anything to Samsung's servers.
Two caveats. First, you will lose some features that only work in the cloud, and the phone will tell you which ones. Second, this toggle only governs Samsung's own Galaxy AI; if you use the separate Gemini or ChatGPT apps, those still process in the cloud under their own settings.
Pixel and other Android phones
Google's Gemini-powered features rely on Private Compute Core and Private AI Compute to handle ambient data privately, and with Android 17 the company is adding AISeal — a hardware-backed layer that isolates on-device AI processing so even the rest of the system cannot reach it. Those protections roll out on new devices through the second half of 2026.
For hands-on control today, open the Gemini app, go to its settings, and review Gemini Apps Activity; switching it off stops your conversations from being saved to your account. It is also worth visiting Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy controls to check which apps can reach your location, camera, and microphone. Android 17 adds a one-time precise-location button, an on-screen indicator that flags when an app reads your location, and a contact picker that shares only the specific contacts an app needs rather than your whole address book.
The trade-off worth knowing
Going local is not free. On-device models are smaller, so some answers are shorter, some translations less polished, and a few features simply grey out. For everyday summarizing, rewriting, and photo edits, most people will not notice. For heavy, creative, or research-style requests, the cloud still does a better job — which is exactly why these platforms keep both options and, increasingly, let you choose per task.
The direction of travel is clear: privacy is becoming a setting, not a sacrifice. Spend five minutes in these menus now, and your phone's AI will keep working — just closer to home.
