Apple's least glamorous subscription keeps sprouting reasons to exist. Come iOS 27, MacRumors reports, the 2TB iCloud+ tier gets a perk nobody else gets: Apple Intelligence for compatible Home app cameras — AI descriptions of your HomeKit Secure Video footage, plus the ability to search camera clips. Notice what's happening there. iCloud+ is turning into Apple's AI-perks tier that happens to include storage. So let's re-run the question: which plan actually earns its monthly charge?
The stuff every tier gets
Even at $0.99, every paid plan carries the same privacy bundle — Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains — per DB Labs' comparison. And the storage does what storage should: drop a file in iCloud Drive and it's in Finder on your Mac, Files on your iPhone, iCloud.com in a browser. Inside Apple's walls, the sync is quick and boring in the best way.
The prices
From Internxt's 2026 roundup: 50GB runs $0.99 a month, 200GB is $2.99, 2TB is $9.99, then it jumps — 6TB at $29.99 and 12TB at $59.99. One quirk to know before you compare rivals: there's no annual billing. Everything is month-to-month. Sounds flexible, works out pricier — Google, Microsoft and Dropbox all knock money off for a yearly commitment. Apple doesn't.
Tier by tier, honestly
The 50GB plan is a snooze button. It hushes the storage-full alert for a few months, and then anyone who actually takes photos is right back where they started. Every 2026 review lands on the same conclusion.
The 200GB plan is the workhorse. At $2.99, Best Cloud Storage Guide calls it the sweet spot for regular photo-takers, and it's hard to argue. Library in the tens of gigabytes? Want backups and the privacy extras? Done. Stop reading.
The 2TB plan is where 2026 changed the math. It was always the power-user pick, and Family Sharing still splits it across up to five people — down to about $1.67 each, which is cheaper per head than the tiny plan. But now it's also the bouncer at the AI door: higher rate limits for Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, and those iOS 27 camera features that smaller plans flat-out don't get. Apple is quietly selling AI capability at a storage price.
The 6TB and 12TB plans? For households shooting ProRes video like it's a job. Everyone else is buying empty shelf space.
Verdict
Living in the Apple ecosystem already? iCloud+ stays the path of least resistance — every review concedes the integration is the product, and it's excellent. Solo users should take the 200GB plan and move on with their lives. Families — and anyone who cares about Apple's AI features — should take the 2TB plan, ideally split five ways, where it becomes almost embarrassingly cheap. Go in knowing the billing is month-to-month only, and knowing the trend: Apple's cleverest features increasingly glance at your storage tier before deciding whether to work.
