Every August the itch comes back: next year's iPhone software, sitting right there, free, months early. This year it's iOS 27 — the public beta is open to everybody, and the current build, beta 4, is the steadiest one yet. Here's how to decide if it's worth it, and how to install it without ruining your week.
Be honest about the trade
Beta software is unfinished on purpose. Apple releases it so regular people can trip over the bugs before the fall launch — install it and you've volunteered for QA duty. That means some apps will crash, your battery will drain faster than you'd like, and things will shift between builds.
So the classic advice holds: don't put it on the phone your life runs through. Got an older spare drawer phone? iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 and everything newer — that's the perfect beta machine.
If you've only got one phone, at least take comfort in the calendar. Beta 4 just landed with another batch of fixes, and August betas are always far tamer than the June ones. This is the safe end of the pool.
What's actually in it
The stuff worth previewing: a new Siri AI app, AI photo editing tools, Safari's reorganized tabs, and beefed-up child-safety controls in Screen Time. If you read that list and shrugged — honestly, just wait for fall. The beta gets you the same features early, not extra ones.
The one step you can't skip
Back up first. Right before installing, not last Tuesday. Do it to a computer if possible, and archive the backup.
The reason is unforgiving: if you bail out of the beta later, getting back to stable iOS means restoring from a backup made before you upgraded. Backups created while you're on iOS 27 won't load onto the older version. That archived backup is your only door out — make sure it exists.
Two smaller bits of prep: know which daily apps you can't afford to lose (banking, work logins, two-factor codes) in case one sulks, and plug the phone in — the install takes a while.
Installing it
- Enroll at beta.apple.com — Apple's free Beta Software Program — signed in with your Apple Account.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and tap Beta Updates.
- Pick iOS 27 Public Beta. Not showing? Wait a few minutes; enrollment can lag.
- Head back to Software Update, where the beta now sits like a normal update. Download, install, done.
After that, fresh beta builds just show up over the air like regular updates.
Changing your mind
There are two exits. The hard one: erase the phone and restore that archived pre-beta backup — annoying, which is why the backup was non-negotiable. The easy one: flip Beta Updates off and wait. When iOS 27 proper ships this fall, your phone slides onto the stable release automatically and the whole adventure ends quietly.
Bottom line
Spare phone, fresh backup, real curiosity about Siri's new app or the photo tools? Go for it — beta 4 is the friendliest on-ramp this cycle. One phone, no backup, low tolerance for weirdness? Fall isn't far. Same features, and the bugs will have been someone else's problem.
