Google's next big hardware night is set: Made by Google, August 12, New York, 6 p.m. ET. That evening start is new — Google usually does afternoon keynotes — and the calendar slot is eight days earlier than last year's show. As for what's being announced? The internet already knows most of it.
The lineup, per the leaks
Four phones and a watch. Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, plus the Pixel Watch 5 series. Detailed spec sheets for all four phones have leaked, and they point to one notable constant — every model reportedly runs the same Tensor G6 chip, no tiering.
The turnaround is quick, too. Devices are expected at retail on August 20, barely a week after the keynote. And pricing leaks put the base Pixel 11 around $1,029 for 256GB, so nobody's expecting a price cut.
The chip is the story
Tensor has been the asterisk on every Pixel review for years. The G6 might finally shrink it. The chip reportedly moves to TSMC's 2-nanometer process — a first for Google — with a seven-core CPU built around a single high-clock Arm C1-Ultra core, a new PowerVR GPU, the updated Titan M3 security chip and a MediaTek M90 modem.
Why care about a manufacturing node? Because heat and battery life are the two complaints that have chased Tensor from day one, and a more efficient process attacks both directly. Worth tempering expectations, though: the performance chatter agrees the G6 still won't catch rival flagship chips on raw speed. Google's playing a different game.
Cameras get tidier, and smarter
The visible changes are subtle. Leaked renders show a slimmer camera housing that sticks out less — most noticeably on the Pro XL — under a continuous glass cover that cleans up the whole back panel. There's new camera hardware in the lineup, and the Pixel 11 is said to get improved face unlock while it's at it.
The invisible changes are the point. Google's expected to lean harder into AI zoom, image enhancement and generative video, with the G6's on-device gains feeding more Gemini assistant features that run right on the phone instead of the cloud.
What to actually do with this information
Reading between the leaks, this is a consolidation year on a faster clock. Same four-phone structure. Familiar design, refined not reinvented. And a chip strategy that finally goes after Tensor's genuine weak spots — thermals and efficiency — rather than chasing benchmark crowns it was never going to win.
If you've skipped Pixels because they ran warm or died early, the G6's new process is the single thing to watch for in reviews. If you're already sold, the wait is short: unveiled on the 12th, in stores on the 20th. If you were hoping Google would undercut Samsung and Apple on price — $1,029 says otherwise.
The leaks have handled the unveiling. What's left for August 12 is the part leaks can't deliver: whether it all holds up when the phone's actually in someone's hand.
