It happens every July: you pull your phone out at the beach or in a hot car, and a warning flashes on screen — the device is too hot and needs to cool down before you can use it. An overheating phone is more than an annoyance. Sustained heat degrades the battery, throttles performance and, over time, shortens the life of the device. Here is why it happens and what actually helps.
Why phones overheat
A smartphone generates heat whenever it works hard, and summer stacks the deck against it. Direct sunlight, hot cars and high ambient temperatures all reduce the phone's ability to shed the heat it produces. On top of that, heat-generating activities — gaming, GPS navigation, video recording, wireless charging and streaming — push the processor and battery to work harder just as the environment makes cooling difficult.
Most phones are designed to run safely up to roughly 35°C (95°F) in ambient temperature. Push past that, especially in direct sun, and the device starts protecting itself by slowing down or shutting off features.

When your phone is already hot, act fast but gently:

- Charge in the cool. Charging generates heat, so avoid charging in direct sun or under a pillow, and skip wireless charging on hot days since it runs warmer than a cable.
- Update your apps. A poorly behaved or outdated app running in the background can quietly max out the processor. Check battery settings to spot any app using an outsized share of power.
- Give gaming a break. Extended high-end gaming is one of the most reliable ways to overheat a phone; short sessions and a removed case help.
When heat signals a real problem
Occasional warmth is normal. Persistent overheating — a phone that runs hot during light tasks, drains rapidly, or grows warm while idle — can point to a failing battery or a misbehaving app. If the problem continues after you have ruled out the environment and background apps, a battery health check is worth it. A swollen battery, in particular, is a safety issue and warrants professional service immediately.
