The customer who never sleeps, never browses, never sees your ad
A growing slice of your customers aren't reading your marketing anymore. They're sending software instead. Braze's numbers: 14% of consumers already use AI agents to deal with brands and make purchases, on track to more than double — 37% — by the end of 2026. Search interest in "AI agent" tripled in a year. That's not a futurist slide deck. That's a channel.
And the infrastructure is already everywhere. Shopping copilots sit inside Google Search, Microsoft Copilot and Amazon's Rufus. Embedded assistants ride along in Shopify, Klarna and Uber. Ask for the best deal and the agent compares, picks and, increasingly, buys. No scroll. No impression. No click.
The machines on the other side of the table
Marketing's answer? Automate its own side of the negotiation. Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Amazon Ads and LinkedIn all default now to AI-run campaign types — Performance Max, Advantage+ and their siblings — while agentic optimization tunes everything on the fly against past results, live trends and audience response.
For working marketers, that's a job change. Manual bid management — the craft skill of an entire generation — is being swallowed by the platforms. What's left is the part platforms can't do: creative strategy. What to say, to whom, and why anyone should believe it.
Retail media eats the open web
Follow the budgets and a second story shows up. Retail media has become a serious programmatic force, and its off-site arm — retailer data powering ads across the wider web — now outpaces on-site placement. Makes sense: purchase data is the closest thing advertising has to ground truth.
Hence the newest players. Non-retail companies, payment platforms above all, are turning their purchase and behavioral data into ad infrastructure. When the transaction layer itself starts selling ads, retail media stops being a retailer side hustle. It becomes digital advertising's connective tissue.
The first-party imperative
Under all of it sits a data reckoning. Shoppers don't love handing information to AI agents, and third-party tracking keeps fading. What's left standing is first-party data — your email list, your CRM, your site behavior. That's the reliable raw material for personalization now.
So the 2026 playbook writes itself. Build direct relationships that earn consented data. Feed it to the automated platforms. Spend the saved labor on creative. The brands that win the agentic era will be legible to machines and memorable to humans — because the bot compares specs, but a person still sets the preference. You're persuading both now.
